Experimental and Numerical Studies on Crashworthiness Parameters of Mild Steel Square Tube under Axial Compression

In this paper, experimental and numerical studies on the crush response of square tube is presented. The explicit Finite Element (FE) code, LS-DYNA is used to simulate crash behavior under the quasi-static test conditions. In experimental study, quasi-static axial compression load is applied on the square tube using universal Testing Machine (UTM). The bottom platen speed used 1 mm/min. The asymmetric collapse mode is observed in all specimens. The development of the axisymmetric mode of collapse in a finite element model is also presented. The predicted fold formation and crush response are found to be in good agreement with the experimental study. Furthermore, the effect of the thickness on crashworthiness parameters like peak crush load, energy absorption capacity and crush force efficiency (CFE) is investigated. The computational analysis is carried out for three different thicknesses, 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 2.5 mm. From the computational analysis, it is observed from that initial peak load is increasing as wall thickness increases. It is also found that the energy absorption capacity of the thin wall tube increases significantly with increase in wall thickness. This kind of nature is noticed due to the increase in the mean crushing load during the quasi-static crush process. It is noticed that the CFE initially increases as wall thickness increases from 1.5 to 2 mm and slight decrease is observed as thickness changes from 2 mm to 2.5 mm. This change observed due to variation in peak load during the plastic collapse for different thicknesses.
