Study on Suitability of Finite Element Type for Modal Analysis of Beams

Mesh element selection has been one of the important phases of FEA (Finite Element Analysis). There is no hard and fast procedure to choose a particular element type for a specific analysis. In this paper the above issue is addressed with respect to modal analysis. This study aims to establish element selection to ensure accurate results when modal analysis is performed using FEA. Then a comparison is drawn between mathematical/analytical and FEA. Error percentages have been calculated in each case with different element types (e.g., Linear and Quadratic Tetrahedron and Hexahedron). This study is presently confined only to 3-D structural solid elements. Aforementioned process has been conducted using cantilever beam as specimen. The objective of this research to find out the best suitable meshing element for modal analysis by comparing FEA results with mathematical results. In this research, Finite Element Analysis has been conducted using ANSYS Mechanical APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language) 15.0 Student Edition. FEA is performed for each element type using the smallest possible element size after performing convergence study. This study is presently confined only to 3-D structural solid elements. Aforementioned process has been conducted using cantilever beam as specimen.
