Effect of defect on the fracture behavior of textile composite

In this study, the effect of defect on the fracture behavior of textile composites was investigated using cohesive zone modeling. Textile composite unit cells were modeled using 3D finite element meshes and cohesive elements were inserted to account for the initiation and propagation of failures. The cohesive elements were classified and assigned with corresponding fracture properties as per the failure modes of fiber and matrix direction failures, interface separation, and cracking in the pure matrix pocket. Unit cell models with diverse initial defects of voids and cracks were analyzed. Results were carefully examined to understand the difference in the strengths and the fracture modes.
