Anaerobic co-digestion of domestic secondary sewage sludge and food waste in a stirred reactor at mesophilic temperature

Sewage sludge and food waste were dumped into landfill continuously; consequently contribute to environmental problem. Sewage sludge and food waste are organic waste are suitable for anaerobic digestion. However, the digestion of sewage sludge and food waste as solely substrate is having a drawback in term of methane yield. Therefore, digestion with two or more waste were introduced. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of domestic secondary sewage sludge and food waste in batch assay. A batch biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay was carried out using Automatic Methane Potential System Test (AMPTS II) under mesophilic temperature. The modified Gompertz kinetics modelling was applied to fit the laboratory data to described the digestion process. The results showed that the supplementing of food waste as co-substrate was significantly improved the digestion in which the ultimate methane yield from the co-digestion improved ten times as compared to the digestion of domestic secondary sewage sludge alone. The kinetics observed from the modified Gompertz were slighty lower than what was observd from the laboratory work. In addition, no acclimation period was observed.
