Effect of the type of superplasticizer on the properties of self-compacting concrete blended with local mineral additives
|
The incorporation of industrial wastes or local natural raw materials as additions in the concrete has become a major economic, technical and environmental issue around the world. In self-compacting concrete SCC, high flowing ability is achieved using superplasticizers which are also known as high range water reducers, while stability against segregation is achieved either by using a large quantity of fine materials. This paper is a study of the effect of three different types of superplasticizers namely: Combined Synthetic Polymers (CSP), Poly Carboxylate Ether (PCE) and Modified Poly Carboxylate Ether (MPCE) on the workability and mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixtures blended with local materials: Algerian natural pozzolana and ground granulated blast furnace slag. The results show that the ether-based superplasticizer PCE gives the best rheological and mechanical performance with minimum dosages. In addition, blast furnace slag promotes better properties in the fresh and hardened state compared to natural pozzolana.
