Water on Fire: The Patients’ Lived Experience of Emergency Coronary Angioplasty
|
Background: The success of coronary angioplasty in treatment of myocardial infarction is under the influence of patient’s experiences. The experiences of people with an emergency angioplasty are unknown. Thus, this study was carried out with the aim of understanding the patients' experiences of emergency angioplasty.
Method:The study was performed by qualitative research method and interpretive phenomenological approach. Nine patients under emergency angioplasty were selected using purposeful sampling. 11 deep and semi-structured interviews with participants were performed. Data were analyzed using Van Manen method.
Results: The five sub-themes of “Diagnosis shockâ€, “Being in an emergency situationâ€, “Trying to self-controlâ€, “The need for reassuring care†and “Stability†formed the structure of this experience under the main theme of “water on fireâ€. The water on fire was the participants’ meaning of the emergency angioplasty.
Conclusion: Patient-centered interactions, meeting the care, supportive and educational needs in situation of diagnosis shock lead to a pleasant experience of returning to life. The findings can be used to develop a comprehensive care plan for patients undergoing emergency coronary artery interventions.
