Characteristics Of Lignin-agarose Hydrogel From Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches’ Black Liquor

The objectives of this study are to recovery the kraft lignin from OPEFBs black liquor and prepare the lignin-agarose hydrogel. Kraft lignin from the OPEFBs black liquor was precipitated at pH 2, 3 and 4 with 5% sulphuric acid. At pH 3, Kraft lignin was precipitated with the higher yield and lower impurity. It has the potential of being utilizes as a raw material for lignin-agarose hydrogel. Epichlorohydrin (ECH) was a crosslinking agent using to prepare the lignin-agarose hydrogel. The effect of cross-linking agent on the textural properties of hydrogel were studied. The gel strength of lignin based hydrogel was determined by texture personal analysis (TPA). The highest gel strength results appeared to the hydrogel consisted of lignin 5%, agarose 5%, and ECH 10 mL. Moreover, the results indicated the moment fracturability, ideal hardness, and springiness of hydrogel.
