Nanobiotechnology in the fungal era: Design, synthesis and biological activity

Nanobiotechnology is a new era in medicine in terms of using nanomaterials of synthetic and natural origin in the remedy, diagnosis, and control of human and animal diseases. In relation of increasing numbers of life-threatening fungal diseases in immunocompromised patients and emerging resistance to old and newly developed antifungal drugs, there is an urgent need to synthesize antifungal nanomaterials with more efficacy and low toxicity for eukaryotic systems. A wide array of nanoparticles and nano-carriers has been developed to combat various types of mycotic diseases from superficial to life-threatening invasive infections. This field has been extended to plant pathogenic fungi which indirectly affect human health as they seriously affect plants as food supplies. This work highlights current status and recent trends in the field of antifungal nanomaterials from synthesis to biological activity and public health concerns in human and animal health, environment, and food hygiene.
