The Critical Speed of High-Speed Rotating Shaft Under the Effect of Torsional Motion at Different Bearing Stiffness

The advantages of high-speed rotating equipment are that it can improve the efficiency of the power output. Thus, accurate prediction of critical speed is important for avoiding any tragic incident from happening due to vibration phenomenon. This work investigated the effect of torsional motion towards critical speed of high-speed rotational shaft at different level of bearing stiffness and the anisotropy of the bearing. The shaft was modeled base on Nelson’s finite element that considered the torsional element. Finite element model was used to established the Campbell’s diagram. It was found that the torsional motion has different significant effect on critical speed for different level of bearing stiffness. The highest effect of 8.57% difference can be seen for soft bearing that occurs in the 1st mode corresponds to forward frequency direction.
