Effect of kemenyan addition on gambier extract as an inhibitor of calcium sulfate scale formation

This study has used natural inhibitors from the modification of gambier extract with the adition of various kemenyan extract as an inhibitor to inhibit the scale formation of calcium sulfate which is a problem in many industries that use groundwater in cooling water system. The experiments were performed using unseeded experiment methods at temperature of 90 °C and crystal morphology analysis was performed by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of the this modification inihibitor in the growth solution of calcium sulfate was able to inhibit the scale formation of calcium sulfate around 14-29 % at the growth concentration of calcium sulfate of 0.1 M. The obtained data of inhibitor effectiveness in various amount of kemenyan extract added displayed in Table 1. The data obtained was confirmed with SEM and it shows that in generally the size of CaSO4 crystal in the presence of inhibitor are smaller than the size of CaSO4 crystal in the absence of inhibitor (Figure 1). Thus, it can be concluded that the inhibitor used are able to inhibit the formation of CaSO4 crystal under these experiment conditions.
