Thermal Characterization Of Portable Micro-gasifier Using Biomass Waste As Fuel And Its Economic Value

At rural area in Yogyakarta (DIY) Province, Indonesia, people still use firewood as the main fuel for cooking, followed by LPG gas. The negative effect of using firewood is the gas emissions containing high greenhouse gas concentrations and tree cutting that can damage the ecosystem. Therefore, alternative technology is needed to be able to change the habit of using firewood and the utilization of renewable energy from biomass waste. This study aims to characterize the heat generated from portable micro-gasifier (PMG) by using a number of fuels derived from some biomass waste and the duration of combustion. It also measured the economic value of biomass waste fuel usage PMG and compared with LPG fuel. This is one of the technical and economic feasibility tests for the application of PMG technology so that it can be used as consideration for the community in order to switch to more environmentally friendly and asrenewable energy technology. The results show that the furnace fueled 250 gr of biomass waste can produce flames with maximum temperature ranging from 705 - 783 oC with the average time of preheating time is 3 minutes. The duration of combustion time is between 60- 72 minutes. 250 gr of charcoal-shaped fuel in the furnace (generating embers), can reach a maximum temperature of 502 oC (for charcoal briquettes) with 108 minutes of combustion duration. From the experiment of cooking 500 gr of rice to rice using 250 gr of fuel, which has the highest economic value is fuel using wood pellets when compared to other biomass fuels and liquified petroleoum gas (LPG).
