Analysis Of The Sustainability Framework, Implementation And Monitoring Methods Adopted By Various U.s. Cities

According to the United Nations, more than 80% of Americans lived in cities in 2010 and these proportions are set to continue rising, reaching 90% for the U.S. by 2050. Hence, it should be a priority for the cities to rethink the way they are utilizing the resources and managing these urban spaces. With the widespread concept of smart cities, people are trying to adopt proven strategies, however, it is still a major challenge due to complex, complicated, chaotic nature and varying urban contexts of our cities. The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of sustainability indicator systems of the selected cities and then examine which cities are more active in comprehensive sustainability reporting in various climate regions of the United States. The literature does provide concepts that should be considered within a framework, but there does not exist a standardized framework for sustainability initiatives. It has been concluded that there exists an apparent disconnect between the development of sustainability indicators and an assessment of their use in most of the selected cities.
