Curcumin Release From Natural Polysaccharide Hydrogel Synthesized From Xanthan Gum And Chitosan

Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound that has a wide pharmaceutical application. It has very low water solubility and bioavailability. In order to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin, a novel biodegradable hydrogel was successfully developed with natural polymers of chitosan and xanthan gum. The hydrogels production efficiency, swelling degree and loading efficiency of curcumin were investigated. At xanthan gum: chitosan ratio of 3:1, hydrogel production yield, swelling degree and loading efficiency were 66%, 23.73 folds and 98.17%, respectively. Artificial saliva was used in an experiment to determine the amount of curcumin released. Maximum amount of curcumin was released after 5 days. The hydrogel structure and surface morphology were characterized using FT-IR and SEM images analysis. All of the above properties were improved with increasing proportion of xanthan gum in the hydrogel. It was found that use of curcumin in hydrogel form is desired for periodontal drug delivery. Cell metabolic activity was assessed on gingiva-derived fibroblast cell line (HGF2) in the presence of curcumin hydrogel. Obtained data shows, curcumin didn’t have toxicity on fibroblast cells.
