Synthesis And Characterization Of Vegetable Oil-based Biopolymer For Decorative Coating

Vegetable oil-based surface coating is a greener solution to reduce the dependency on petroleum-based product and volatile organic compound emission was synthesised through three stages of chemical modification of Jatropha oil. The reaction started off with epoxidation followed by acrylation finally maleinisation to functionalise the triglycerides of Jatropha oil. Epoxidation of Jatropha oil measured using oxirane oxygen content (OOC) test of value 4.814% OOC which show optimum epoxidation reaction at three hour of reaction time. Acid value for epoxidized, acrylated and maleinised Jatropha Oil was recorded at 3.40 mg KOH/g, 1.58 mg KOH/g and 2.58 mg KOH/g respectively. FTIR results show the functional groups of maleinised, acrylated jatrpha oil and epoxy jatropha oil. Conclusively, vegetable oil-based surface coating can be made using Jatropha oil as the precursor and functionalised to suit the purpose and application as surface coating that is biodegradable, safe and environmental-friendly.
