Are Intersections Of The Capital Of Bangladesh Performing Well? A Factor Based Analysis

This paper analyses the existing condition of the intersections along one of the busiest corridors of Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh. Dhaka is a very fast growing city which faces enormous difficulties to manage its traffic. Poor performance of intersections leads to greater traffic congestion which brings endless sufferings to the citizens. So we present performance assessment of intersections in this paper to understand the existing situation from multiple aspects and recommend feasible solutions to improve it. Ranking based on performance of intersections was achieved using level of service (LOS) of intersections. LOS was measured based on stopping time at each intersection which was found from volume survey. We found that performance of most of the intersections in peak period was substandard since most of the intersections fell into F category which is considered as worst standard. This paper also presents the factors behind poor performance of intersections.
