Estimation Of Depth Values Using Multispectral Worldview-2 Satellite Imagery- Feasibility Study: Hendorabi Island, Persian Gulf

Having precise depth values is a necessity for benthic habitat mapping using multispectral satellite imagery. Usually, the reliable field measured bathymetric information is not available in most of cases; hence it is necessary to estimate depth values directly from remotely sensed data. This study aimed to examine the linear and ratio transform methods to indicate which method is optimum for extraction of depth values from WorldView-2 (WV2) satellite imagery. The methods were applied on a WV2 satellite image for the Hendorabi Island in the northern Persian Gulf. The image was corrected atmospherically, radiometrically, and geometrically before to implement the main processes. A total number of 20104 sounding points with known depth values are available for the studied area and within the satellite image. All of the depth values were adjusted based on tidal data of the time of imagery. Half of these points were applied in each model option (linear and ratio transforms) to determine unknown parameters using linear regression, and the rest of the points were used for accuracy assessment of the applied methods. Final results demonstrated that the linear model including all three bands (Red, Green, and Blue bands) has yielded the optimum accuracy and precession (R2= 0.84, RMSE=0.9 m, and Standard error of estimate= 1.44).
