Recovery Prediction Of Thymol From Ajwain Using Supercritical Co2 Via Broken And Intact Cells And Shrinking Core Models

In this study thymol extraction from Ajwain by supercritical carbon dioxide was modeled with broken and intact cells and the shrinking core models. Mathematical models were matched with experimental data and the effects of operational variables such as temperature, pressure, dynamic time and flow rate on improving extraction were investigated. According to the obtained figures the shrinking core model had a better agreement with the experimental data. Also optimization was performed by the genetic algorithm and optimal operating conditions of temperature 42.73 °C, flow rate 1.85 ml/min, time 104.3 min and pressure 20.42 MPa were determined for maximum recovery of 56.078 w/w% thymol.
