The Effect Of Nano-silica And Crumb Rubber On Concrete Strength

The massive production of automobile tires in the world and their low rate of decomposition in nature has become an environmental issue. There are many ways to use these tires after their service life. One way is inclusion of crumb rubber as fine additive in the concrete. It has many beneficial impacts to both environments and concrete. However, using these crumbed rubber may decrease compressive strength of concrete. On the other hand, nanoparticles can improve mechanical properties of concretes and decrease water absorption. In this study, the compressive strength of 7, 28 and 90-day concrete containing rubber (0.6 wt.% ) with and without nanosilica (1 and 3 wt%) have been investigated and compared with conventional concrete. The results showed that compressive strength of concrete containing rubber decreased about 4% comparing to the conventional ones, while it increased more than 48% for concrete including nanosilica due to refining the size of the pores and densify the interfacial transition zone between cement matrix and aggregates. It has been found that the inclusion of both nano silica and rubber improved compressive strength of concrete by 34% after 28-days.
