Effect Of Variation In Number Of Bays And Storeys On The Seismic Vulnerability Of Deficient Reinforced Concrete Structures

Generally, the stiffness of reinforced concrete (RC) structures increases with increasing the number of bays and decreases with increasing number of storeys. This implies that the increase in stiffness add to the stability of a structure and ensures the better seismic performance of the structure. However, besides stiffness, the ductility, mass and fundamental period of a structure are also important factors that affect its seismic performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of deficient RC structures with a varying number of bays and storeys. For this purpose, deficient buildings with a variable number of bays and storeys that are typical to developing countries are considered. Their seismic response is assessed in terms of vulnerability curves. Different damage states are defined to evaluate the response variation at different levels of damage. Results indicate increased vulnerability with increasing number of bays and a decrease with increasing number of storeys.
