Improving Pertamina’s Refinery Operation By Incorporating It’s Own Catalyst & Chemicals In The Process

Oil refining is a very competitive industry. Oil refiners are struggling to increase their margin by any means possible. Many route are possible including but not limited to process optimization, increasing burner efficiency, product diversification, and crude oil blend optimization. Process optimization are one of the key componen in answering the challenge. In doing so, Pertamina has done two key activities which is developing and producing its own catalyst to improve naphta hydrotreating unit performance in the refinery and formulating chemical such as corrosion inhibitors and demulsifiers to be used in the crude distillation unit and crude oil desalting unit. These two activity has proven to be important in helping to improve overall oil refining process performance. All effort that has been made to overcome this problem can be justified by the margin increased. This paper reviews Pertamina’s experience in designing, producing and using its own catalyst and chemicals in its commercial oil refining operation.
