Forest Operations In Steep Terrain In Turkey

Turkey has 21,7 million hectare forest area which makes up 27,6 % of its total. Approximately 46 % of the total forest area is on steep terrain with slopes greater than 40 %. Because of the fact that, harvesting in steep terrain has always played a significant role in Turkey. Forestry operations in Turkey are carried out at different parts of the country under different conditions. Only the best forest road networks can provide conditions for working in wide, scattered and difficult mountainous areas. Approximately 18 million m³ logs are transported via forest roads in Turkey, each year (GDF, 2013). Technical phases for forest operation production are; Felling: Cutting and falling, brach cleaning, peak taking, bucking and debarking.Timber extraction: Taking out the log by dragging near the chopped wood and carrying.Transportation: Taking from roadside to store as wood processing centers. In this study, forest operation systems was examined in Turkish Forestry .
Keywords: Forest operation, steep terrain, felling
