Smart Value Stream Mapping: An Integral Approach Towards A Smart Factory

The integral consideration of Lean and Digital Manufacturing will be one of the future key success factors for production systems to address increasing challenges. For this purpose this paper presents a holistic methodology - Smart Value Stream Mapping (SVSM) - to improve process chains considering Lean and Digital Manufacturing integrally. For many organizations Value Stream Mapping (VSM) has become one of the most common and powerful Lean Manufacturing methods for holistic optimization of value streams. The elimination of non-value added activities is one of the key principles targeted by VSM. In recent years, Digital Manufacturing or Industry 4.0 has been further called out to address the increasing complexity and dynamics of modern production systems. The vision includes high levels of digitization, integration and automation of information and material flows for a factory and beyond its borders including suppliers and customers. Based on VSM, the approach shown in this paper uses an extended set of standardized symbols and figures to enable more transparent decisions and improvements for production systems.
