Antifungal Cream From The Volatile Oil Of The Leaves Of Mayana (plectranthus Scutellarioides (l.) R. Br.)

The antifungal property of formulated cream containing volatile oils from mayana (Plectranthus scutellarioides) leaf was studied. The leaves yielded 0.095% volatile oil which has pale yellow color and camphoraceous odor, slightly viscous and soluble in ethyl alcohol and chloroform. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the oil contained 59.104% α-terpineol, 26.402% caryophyllene oxide, 21.799% humulene, 20.665% caryophyllene, 15.444% cis-verbenol and 11.633% 1-methyl-4(1-methylethyldene)cyclohexanol). The oil significantly inhibiter growth of Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes but produced no zone of inhibition against Candida albicans. Thirty percent formulation pf the cream was most effective against Aspergillus niger. It is recommended that steam distillation be used to increase the yield of volatile oil and further study should be done to improve the cream’s formulation so that it can be effectively used against Trichophyton mentagrophytes and investigate the dermal irritation of the cream.
