A Nano-structured Vanadium (v)-quercetin Complex: Synthesis, Characterization And Applications

The polyphenol quercetin dihydrate (PQD) formed a new dark green complex with vanadium (V). The complex formed in slightly acidic medium with a molar ratio 1:2 (metal: ligand). In this paper, we aimed to prepare the above complex in nano-size by two different methods. The first, precipitation method: depends on stirring of vanadium (V) and quercetin in ethanolic medium for 6 hours in presence of Triton X-100 as a surfactant. The second, sonochemical method: carried out by gradual addition of quercetin on ethanolic solution of vanadium (V) under the powerful ultrasound irradiation (20 KHZ to 10 MHZ). The reaction mixture irradiated for 1 hour at room temperature to induce the chemical reaction between the metal ion and quercetin. The characterization of vanadium (V)-quercetin complexes have been performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The average particle sizes of the two complexes were found to be in the range of (30-50 nm). The results showed that the above complexes have wide applications for removal of some dye-pollutants from industrial water samples.
