Critical Factors Affecting Work Life Balance Of Managerial Women - An Empirical Study With Reference To Tamilnadu, India

Despite the increasing workforce participation of women, India remains largely a hierarchical male-dominated society. The cultural traditions and family role structures have not changed significantly and women on an average still bear responsibilities for daily household chores, such as cooking, shopping, providing care for children and aged family members They are intimately linked. The changing social structures arising out of dual career couples, single parent families, an increasing number of parents and dependent care responsibilities for children and ageing parents have all contributed to increasing research in the area of work life balance especially in the service sector. Tamil Nadu is mainly driven by the service sector. The agriculture sector has been decreasing. This has resulted in the growth of service sector. With incentives such as industrial parks and tax exemptions being offered, the service sector is expected to contribute to a greater extent to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in the next decade. Trade, hotels and restaurants are the biggest contributors to the service sector. Financial services and communication industry also has the strongest hold in the country. The present study is based on the responses elicited from the selected managerial women in Tamil Nadu. For the purpose of identifying the target population, the researcher has selected five industries namely Banking, Insurance, IT & BPO, Hotel and Communication sector. Hereby in my article Information Technology and Business Processing Outsourcing is termed as IT & BPO Sectors. From the list of companies who agreed to co-operate with the research work, 20 companies from each sector were randomly selected. However, care is also taken in the selection of companies so as to represent the major cosmopolitan cities of the state. The main objective of the study is to analyze the critical factors that affect the work life balance of women managers and to provide suggestions and seek suitable strategies for the women to achieve work life balance.
