Research On The Immediate Update Of Topographic Maps With The UAV Technology

With the rapid development of society, the major increase in land exploitation and utilization leads to quick changes of the earth’s surface within a short time. Currently the updating method of the topographic maps in which the maps are modified based on large-scale aerial shots operations every several years seems already unable to follow the rate of the surface change and meet the requirements of the users. Therefore, it’s worth studying how to quickly obtain the updated maps that can meet the resolution requirements and can be used for economic purpose immediately. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology is widely used in many fields, for example, engineering, logistics, multimedia, etc. It is characterized by great flight stability, high-resolution images, high mobility and not being affected by the clouds, and thus is suitable for the tasks of small-scale topographic shots. Thereby, this study, taking the National Quemoy University in Taiwan as a case, investigates the resolution of the topographic maps modification in which the UAV is used to obtain the immediate image materials. Then, the study conducts comparative analysis with the result of the traditional aerial shots operating modes. The results show that the average deviation of the horizontal coordinate between check points is 0.244m, the average deviation of elevation is 0.172m, the strikes of the contours tend to be identical, and the resolution meets the requirements of the 1/1000 topographical maps in Taiwan. Hence, it is a viable method to update the map materials with UAV and it can also help improve the efficiency of the constructive planning and implementation.
