Selective Separation Of The Bioactive Compounds Via Nanotechnology

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) is known as a good candidate to separate a special molecule from mixture of their similar molecules in natural products. In this research the MIPs were synthesized for two bioactive compounds with High selectivity and the proper characterizations comparatively to non-imprinted polymers (NIPs). Catechin (+), Acrylic acid (AA) and Trimethylolpropanetrimethacrylate (TRIM) (in a molecular ratio 1:20:80) as a template, functional monomer and cross-linker were dissolved in acetonitrile porogen to carry out bulk polymerization reaction [1]. Di-butyl phthalate (DBP), methacrylic acid (MAA) and TRIM (in a molecular ratio 1:4:8) were used for precipitation polymerization reaction in toluene solvent [2]. The synthesized polymers-based AA (MIPs-AA) had the binding capacity ca.304.0 mg.g-1 for Catechin while it was 4.0mg.g-1 for Quercetin (similar structure of Catechin). The binding capacity of the synthesized MIPs via precipitation technique (MIPs-MAA) was 830 mg.g-1 for DBP while it was 182 mg.g-1 for bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (similar structure of DBP). The comparison of the binding capacities with similar molecules indicates high selectivity for the MIPs-AA and MIPs-MAA. The polymers were evaluated by Brunner Emmett-Teller (BET) and scan electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. According to BET analysis, the specific surface area of the MIPs-AA and MIPs-MAA were 488.4 m2.g-1 and 690 m2.g-1 respectively [3].This study showed that, the MIPs nanotechnology can be suggested as a suitable method for separation of the special chemical materials like toxin, the bioactive compounds from medicinal plants or secondary metabolites [4].
