Scenarios For Evaluating The Balance Of Nitrogen In Terengganu’s Agriculture System

An advanced study has been performed using the SAGI concept to investigate nitrogen flow movement in the agricultural production and metabolism system in Terengganu, Malaysia by depicting the nitrogen flow in using Substance Flow Analysis model nitrogen spatial map. The proposed SAGI concept involved three phases: a) Substance Flow Analysis application, b) Substance Flow Analysis-Geographic Information System integration, and c) Geographic Information System application. The nitrogen modeling in agricultural soil was estimated in the unit of ton/ha+yr in 2016. Based on the Substance Flow Analysis-Geographic Information System integration result, two key causes of pollution in this region have been identified: (1) the application of nitrate fertiliser in agricultural activities with 5954 tons/ha+yr, and (2) direct disposal of manure and agricultural wastes into the environment with 1026 tons/ha+yr. The result also showed the spatial pattern of agricultural nitrogen emission in Terengganu. This study concluded that SAGI is able to provide an overall picture of nitrogen pollution in the agricultural ecosystem at the national level and it can be the best method to support decision-making in planning for agricultural wastes, nutrients, and resources management.
